Electronic meets hip-hop in M3staken’s new album

Screen Shot 2016-06-26 at 11 (1400x1400) (2)

After releasing his debut album, Apex, earlier this year- a combination of hip-hop beats with electronic effects and an intriguing classical piano edge, the young producer, M3staken has returned with his continuation record, Water Colors.

M3staken’s style is not your everyday type of music, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Jarring rhythms and beats is what M3 does best, compiling complex musical structures with subtle melody and moody drones that underpin his work. Consequently, there’s a definite dark ambience to his music; a dissonance that is expertly crafted and formed into a challenging listen.

Growing up in South Carolina, M3staken takes influence from a wide range of artists including Joey Bada$$, Jamie XX and FKA Twigs.

With an ambitious sound that is difficult to pin down, M3staken is one to listen to if you’re even the remotest hip-hop fan.

‘Leaves, Sadness, Science’ by Marilyn Carino

marilyn-carino-headshot-arms-spread

Marilyn Carino is best known for her electronic-fusion music and her latest album, Leaves, Sadness, Science exhibits some of her best work in the genre to date. Having shared stages with Black Star and David Byrne, Carino’s album fuses soul and even hip-hop with her favoured electro style and also features R.E.M bassist, Mike Mills.

The whole album was written, recorded and mastered by Marilyn herself, combining complex beats and rhythms with deep synths and spacey vibes. Her long time practice of Nichiren Buddhism is the force that forms her songs into gripping, graphic internal monologues that explore themes of sex and radical self-expression. As a result, her music has been labelled as ‘enchanting’ and her voice has been given the accolade of ‘powerful to the point of bringing you to tears’.

Carino recorded her first album at Neil Young’s studio with Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot producing. She then flew to London on a one-way ticket and stayed for a year working as an engineer in reggae recording studios. Upon returning to the U.S. she co-founded the vintage electronic group Mudville, producing three critically acclaimed albums and wrote lyrics for the great producers Sly and Robbie (Grace Jones, Simply Red). Mudville’s song ‘Wicked’ won the 2008 Independent Music Award for Best Song. She recorded and produced her first solo album ‘Little Genius’ in 2011, and recently contributed vocals and lyrics to the Words Hurt indie hip hop collective’s ‘Fuck That Pretty Boy Shit’, featuring Samuel T. Herring, vocalist of Future Islands.

Everything Under make electronic rock accessible for all with single ‘Happy Matters

Electronic rock group Everything Under (EU) have a unique outlook on life, which they portray through their quirky single ‘Happy Matters’ and psychedelic music video. The single taken from their upcoming album ‘Where Have The Kids Gone at Night’ follows an electronic rock sound but blends 80s synth pop with 90s alternative grungy guitar, giving it a unique sound.

EU’s front man Mark J. Heidecke lost his sister in a car accident in 1998 and spent years pondering her loss. He soon decided to attend Ex’pression College for Digital Arts where he learnt sound design, music theory and performance and found his passion was with music. The loss of his sister always effected Heidecke but he found music was that form of escape.

EU consists of Grammy Award winning producer/sound engineer Jeff Lane, drummer Kevin T. Jones and Bernie Grundman who mastered EU’s latest tracks. The group aim to make electronic rock genre more accessible to all and after listening to ‘Happy Matters’ it seems they’ve been successful.

Impressive electronic rework of Adam & the Ants’ Kings of the Wild Frontier by Johnny Normal (Featuring Marco Pirroni)

Electronic musician Johnny Normal delivers this shiny synth-driven rework of Adam & the Ants’ 1980 classic album Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Reaching number 1 in the UK album chart and spawning three hit singles ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and ‘Antmusic’, the original Kings of the Wild Frontier has left its legacy on the world.

Johnny Normal’s download only rework celebrates 36 years since the original release, and sees the talented producer recording his own unique versions of all of the songs. The album features double Ivor-Novello Award-Winning Ants songwriter and guitarist Marco Pirroni.

The album project was initially the idea of Adam Ant himself, who liked the style of Johnny’s music.

As Johnny explains: ‘My version of KOTWF is not meant as a copycat album as we could never improve on such a classic, rather an Ant fan’s homage to the fabulously exciting original record by Adam, Marco and co which had such an impact on my life and the lives of millions of the MTV generation.

The project sees Johnny teaming up with close friend and guitarist Psycho Pete and backing vocalist/bass player Izzie voodoo.  Whilst on tour supporting Adam Ant, Johnny and Psycho played several of their own electronic interpretations of Ants songs, performing to crowds of up to 3000 people. The performances were well-received by audience members, cementing the idea for the duo to create their own electronic cover album.

In 2014, the project came to a frightening halt when Johnny Normal was hospitalised in three intensive-care units with a succession of life-threatening illnesses. His life support was turned off twice and he was expected not to survive. Beating the odds, he pulled through, his family requesting that the unfinished album be played whilst he was in his coma, spurring him on to fight death. ‘I have no doubt this provided me with a subconscious link to the outside world and aided my recovery,’ Johnny has stated.

Appealing to both Adam and the Ants fans and electronic music lovers, it’s a record that all kinds of music enthusiasts can get into.

There will be an ‘album listening party event’ in London on Friday 17th June, tickets and info from www.johnnynormal.net

The album will be released Friday 17th June 2016
